今世紀最後の四半世紀まで、キリスト教国エチオピアの芸術作品は、その国境以外ではほとんど知られていなかった。最近の研究によって、エチオピアの芸術家たちが何世紀にもわたって、イコン、照らされた写本、教会の壁画など、並外れた作品を制作してきたことがある程度わかってきた。地理的な位置からして、エチオピア美術はアフリカに属するが、それらの地域が経験した歴史的な出来事によってもたらされたその発展は、東方の芸術的伝統（ビザンチウム）から西方への、イスラム文化からインド洋の広大な地域からのモデルの導入と密接に結びついている。本書は、アディスアベバにあるエチオピア研究所が所蔵する、教会や修道院で何世紀にもわたって大切に保管されてきたイコンを集めた、類まれな木版画コレクションの総目録である。このように本書は、エチオピア美術に関する我々の知識を広げることに大きく貢献すると同時に、アフリカにおけるキリスト教美術の新たな側面を明らかにするものである。巻末には、用語集や参考文献を含む付録のセクションがある。ユニヴァーシティ・カレッジ博物館とアディスアベバのエチオピア研究所博物館の創設者兼学芸員であり、『エチオピア研究』誌の共同責任者でもあるスタニスワフ・チョジュナッキは、1966年に「古いエチオピア絵画保存委員会」を結成した。
